Trucking – Through the Sands of Time. From Hooves to Highways

Freight Rate Central

First, let’s discuss how we’ve moved freight around throughout history. Now, I’m not referring to the diesel fed monsters you see on the highways today; I’m talking about the age-old journey of how we, as a nation, felt the itch to improve, went through our fair share of ups and downs, and eventually adapted to the changing world around us. Let’s dive deep into that nostalgic lane, and take a trip through time shall we?.

Think back – or, well, imagine – a time when the roads had more of a rhythmic ‘clip-clop’ than the howl of tuned up, and bored down engines of today. Yep, horses were the big deal back then! And sure, while those horse-pulled carriages had a charm of their own, they weren’t exactly ideal for lugging around oversized load shipping equipment, or covering long distances quickly.

Fast forward to the early 1900s, and Shazam! Trucks entered the scene, all thanks to that nifty invention: the internal combustion engine. These early trucks, mostly made of wood, were kind of the awkward teenagers of the transportation world. Useful, but still finding their feet.

Then came World War I, and suddenly, trucks weren’t just the new kids on the block. They were the stars, playing pivotal roles in

moving soldiers and supplies. That spotlight during the war was like their graduation, paving the way for bigger and better things.

After the war, things really started cooking. Trucks got rubber tires, became beefier, and with the 1930s rolling in, even got those efficient diesel engines. And by the 1950s? The birth of the U.S. Interstate Highway System was like the opening of grand theaters for these trucking stars.

Now, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Remember the 1970s Oil Crisis? It gave everyone in the trucking world a big old reality check about relying too much on oil. So, we started thinking outside the box, eyeing more sustainable options.

But through thick and thin, our drive to push forward, to innovate, never wavered. I mean, today we’re even talking about trucks driving themselves! It’s wild to think how we went from simple horse carriages to these tech-savvy giants.

In a nutshell, the story of trucking isn’t just about vehicles; it’s about us – our dreams, our challenges, our spirit. As we look down the road, I can’t help but wonder: what’s the next pit stop on this epic journey?

Top Carriers in the Trucking Industry:
Big Shots of the Road

Honestly, is there anyone who doesn’t know FedEx? Their trucks are everywhere, proudly wearing those standout colors. They’re the folks we all secretly (or not-so-secretly) cheer for when we’re waiting on that rush delivery. Plus, that ‘Cast Away’ connection? Classic! FedEx is by far the top dog here, coming in at over $8,594,000,000 in revenue generated in 2021!

If FedEx is the flashy star, Old Dominion is like that artist everyone respects for sheer craftsmanship. They don’t just drop off packages; they make sure they’re spot on every single time. If you want something done right and on schedule, these are your guys. In the year 2021 Ol’ Dirty Dog gave FedEx a run for their money coming in at #2 with a reported annual revenue of over $5,177,000,000. Now that’s quite the feat!!

When it comes to variety, XPO Logistics is like the all-you-can-eat buffet of trucking. From a truck brokerage to global forwarding, they’ve got a finger in every American pie ;). Their trucks are more than just transport; they’re a sign of global connection, and ingenuity. Coming in at #3 we have XPO Logistics, with a 2021 annual revenue of $4,192,000,000.
** YRC / Yellow Corp would have taken this cake had they not closed their doors in 2023. Had this page been published last year they would have made the list as they generated $886 Million more than XPO Logistics did in 2021. UP NEXT, 2023. US Trucking Industries Winners and Losers!

These guys have been around the block. Almost 90 years in the game and still going strong. Their trucks might as well have “Experience on board” written allover them. If trucking had a hall of fame, Estes would definitely have a dedicated wing. They’d have their own Hall! Estes generated over $3,783,000,000 in revenue for 2021. That’s a lot of hauls!

When talking trucking, R&L Carriers has to be on the list. It’s like discussing music and leaving out The Beatles. A family gig that turned into a nationwide sensation, R&L Carriers is all about bringing that personal touch to the big world of freight shipping. R&L and fam generated $2,427,000,000 greenbacks in 2021. That year little Jimmy sat at the big table, and had him some tasty Sangria with Grandma Cita’s Thanksgiving Turkey. Don’t judge.

Saia is the sort of name that might not make headlines every day, but they’re the backbone of many businesses. They’re all about reliability, consistency, and trust. You know, the good stuff. In today’s industry, those 3 things are hard to come by, and matter the most. Estes came in with over $2,289,000,000 in revenue generated in 2021. They may have come in at #6, but they will always be #1 in my book.

Alright, I’ll wrap up our little truck-spotting adventure here. But next time you’re out and about, and one of these big boys passes you by, give a nod. Behind every truck is a story – tales of long nights, endless roads, and the sweet rhythm of wheels against asphalt. Trucking isn’t just about moving stuff; it’s about connecting places, businesses, and ultimately, all of us…. and that right there is a big 10-4 little buddy.

Let's Talk About Trucking:
Current Trends and Challenges.
The Ups, The Downs, and The Curves Ahead.

Okay, folks, let’s hit the road and chat about something that’s often overlooked, but is as crucial as your morning coffee (or tea, if that’s your jam): The Trucking Industry. Whether it’s the fresh produce in your kitchen, the smartphone in your pocket, or that comfy couch you’re lounging on, there’s a good chance a truck brought it to you. Now, with times a-changin’, the world of trucking is undergoing its own transformations and tackling some intriguing challenges. Let’s dive right in shall we!

Green Lights: Sustainability is the Word

With all the chatter about climate change and Mother Earth needing some good love, the trucking sector is doing its part. There’s a big push for more environmentally-friendly rigs. Think electric trucks, or those running on alternative fuels. Tesla’s Semi might’ve stolen the limelight, but trust me, there’s a whole lot more coming down the pipeline. The green trucking revolution is revving up, and I, for one, am all for it! If electric trucks weren’t “shocking” enough (did you see what I did there?;), we get into the wondrous world of Alternative Fuels!

Before too long we will have our products and goods shipped to us in trucks running off Alcohol-gasoline blends, Biobutanol, Biodiesel, Coal-derived liquid fuels, Dimethyl ether, Ethanol, and hydrogen. Can you imagine it??! Let’s do this together… You just got home and are pulling into your driveway. You stop and open up the fuel tank door to top off the tank for work tomorrow by turning on the garden hose, and throwing down gallons of tap water into the throat of your hydrogen burning engine. Wait..what??!! Yep, times are a change’n my friend! All aboard the crazy train!

Tech Talk: Trucking Gets Smarter

When you picture a truck, you might think of burly machines and tough drivers, right? But today’s trucks are geeking out (in the best way possible). Advanced telematics, fleet management software, and driver assistance systems are becoming the norm. And guess what? We’re even heading towards autonomous trucks. Yeah, self-driving 18-wheelers! The Jetsons would be soooo proud.

On the Flip Side: Driver Shortage

Here’s where things get a bit sticky. While tech is great and all, we’re facing a serious shortage of truck drivers. Young folks aren’t exactly queuing up for trucking jobs, and many seasoned drivers are nearing retirement. This isn’t just a “We’re hiring!” sign kind of issue; it’s reshaping the industry’s very fabric. No one wants to work nowadays. I get that, who wants to work right? My question is how are the ones who don’t want to work making money? Are they cuddled up to uncle Sam, or simply living life with no income? That baffles me… but it ain’t how I was brought up, that I know.

E-Commerce Explosion: Blessing or Curse?

Raise your hand if you’ve ever impulse-bought something online at 2 a.m. (guilty as charged!). Online shopping is booming, which means more things to ship and deliver. But with great volume comes great responsibility. The trucking industry is grappling with tight delivery windows, urban traffic, and customers who want their stuff “like, yesterday!” It’s both an opportunity and a big ol’ challenge. The attention span of this generation dwindles more and more with every Amazon purchase, and Youtube view. Have you ever seen Wall-E? Food for thought! Who doesnt love that little robot though.

Roadblocks: Regulations & Infrastructure

Every industry has its hurdles, and for trucking, it’s the state of our roads and ever-evolving regulations. Potholes aren’t just annoying; they can be costly and dangerous for truckers. Add to that the rules and regulations that can vary from one state to the next, and you’ve got yourself quite the maze to navigate. Take California for instance… no really. Take California.

Safety First, Always

This is non-negotiable. As trucks get smarter, the industry’s focus on safety is sharper than ever. Whether it’s advanced braking systems, fatigue monitoring, or enhanced training for drivers, keeping our roads safe is always top of the list. The tech these trucks and our vehicles have these days is absolutely mind bending. Its an amazing time to be alive!

Wrapping it up, the trucking world is buzzing with changes each and every day. Some are super exciting, and others, well, they’re a bit of a head-scratcher. But through all the ups and downs, one thing’s for sure: the spirit of trucking, that essence of freedom, adventure, and sheer determination, remains unshaken, and always will.

Next time you spot a truck on your way to work, or during a road trip, give a friendly wave. Behind its steel and wheels is an industry that’s hustling, adapting, and driving us all forward, quite literally. So say high sometime, we wont bite… much.

Trucking Tomorrow:
A Journey Beyond the Horizon

Isn’t the world of trucking just something else? Every time I’m on the highway and one of those colossal rigs whizzes by, I’m left marveling. But, as with everything, change is always lurking just around the corner. So, what’s the future of trucking look like, you ask? Let’s dive in, shall we?

The Electric Dream

So I have this friend from Ohio that posts non-stop about his new electric car. He’s definitely proud and amazed by what his car can do. “It’s the future!” he keeps saying. And while I hate to admit it, I think he’s without a doubt onto something. Trucks are catching up, big time. I dream of a day when the hum of an electric engine replaces the grumbling of a diesel engine. Who am I kidding. I myself run a tuned stage 4 cam, K&N cold air intake, 6.2 throttle body and manifold, longtube headers, Magnaflow exhaust, outfitted with a flex fuel kit on a L83 that sounds like a race car ripping down the track every time I leave my driveway.

I run flex fuel so its technically an eco-friendly vehicle.  Anyways, that’s what I tell people. I don’t so much care for an electric engine sound. What can I say.. Ideally I want to hear the roar of a C10, with an LT4, stage 4 cam, long pipe headers, Fm Super 44, running nitrous at wide open throttle. The environment doesnt though, and I respect that. Maybe the new electric vehicles will include on the list of add-on’s at the dealership a feature that gives the vehicle a Mopar sound when I step on the pedal? What? Why are you looking at me like that? One can dream right? Anyhoo, Cleaner roads equal happier planet—and what’s not to love about that?!

A Helping Hand on the Wheel

The idea of a truck driving itself? Sounds like something out of my nephew’s sci-fi books. But it’s inching closer to reality. Now, don’t get me wrong—I’d trust Bob from down the road with my delivery over a robot any day. But a little tech to help him out on those long, lonely stretches? I’m all in.

Trucks With a Mind of Their Own

Did you hear about this? Trucks chatting with each other about the weather, traffic, and whatnot. Okay, not exactly like that, but close. Networking trucks could be a game-changer. It’s like if my old truck, Rusty, could tell me there’s a diner five miles ahead with the best darn pie.

Drones: More than Cool Kid Toys

Picture this: you order a gadget online. A truck pulls up in your ‘hood, but instead of a driver hopping out, a drone zips to your doorstep. Sounds wacky, but with the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if my next package gives me a mini UFO show.

Cheers to Our Road Warriors

For all the tech stuff coming in, here’s a truth bomb: trucking is nothing without the men and women behind the wheel. As the industry changes, keeping them in tip-top shape—both in spirit and body—is a big deal. It’s not just about new techy toys; it’s about making their life on the road a touch better.

Hyper-what-now?

I read about this over coffee one morning. Trucks, super-fast, in tubes? Like those bank drive-thrus? It’s out there, but if trucking’s taught me one thing, it’s to expect the unexpected.

To wrap it up, the road ahead for trucking? It’s as exciting as a twisty mountain drive. Here’s to the future—may it bring more adventures, fewer potholes, and lots of pie stops.

How to Choose a Reliable Trucking Service

You know that feeling when you finally find the right pair of jeans? The ones that fit just right, hug in all the right places, and don’t cost an arm and a leg? Now, imagine having that same Aha! moment when finding a trucking service. Sounds dreamy, right? But here’s the thing, diving into the vast ocean of freight trucking companies without a seasoned guide is like looking for that elusive needle in a haystack. Enter stage right: us. Think of us as your seasoned style consultant, but for trucking services. Let’s take this journey together, and we’ll find you the perfect match. Here’s how:

Experience Matters... Big Time.

The old diner down the road that’s been serving up the same juicy burger for decades probably has it down to a science. Similarly, in the trucking world, experience isn’t just a plus, it’s a must. Veteran companies have encountered every roadblock (sometimes literally!) and have refined their processes over the years. We’ve got the inside scoop on who these seasoned players are.

Tailored Services: No One-Size-Fits-All.

Just as you wouldn’t wear snow boots to the beach, your trucking needs are unique. Maybe you’re shipping delicate antiques, possibly a member of the government shipping equipment for the military, or perhaps a bulk order of rubber duckies. Whatever it is, it’s essential to find a service that caters to your specific needs. And guess what? We have a line-up of top-notch companies just waiting to be matched with shippers like you.

Stellar Customer Service is Gold.

Ever tried returning a sweater and faced the wrath of a disgruntled employee? Yikes! In trucking, it’s vital to choose a service where customer care isn’t an afterthought. Problems can pop up – delayed shipments, route changes, or that one time a raccoon decided to hitch a ride. You want a company that’s there for you, rain or shine. And we’ve got a nifty little list of those gems.

Safety First. Always.

Would you hire a babysitter with a track record of misplaced children? Probably not. So why gamble with a trucking service that’s lax on safety? We rigorously vet our recommendations, ensuring their safety records are top-tier. Sleep easy knowing your goods are in secure hands.

Transparency is the Name of the Game.

Hidden fees and surprise costs? No, thank you! You want (and deserve) a trucking service that’s upfront about rates, potential extra charges, and delivery times. With us as your broker, we ensure you’re always in the loop, with no unwanted financial surprises.

Check Those Reviews (But Take Them with a Grain of Salt).

We all know Dave, who gave the bakery a one-star review because they ran out of blueberry muffins. While customer reviews provide valuable insights, they’re not the be-all and end-all. We help sift through the noise, distinguishing genuine concerns from the occasional muffin mishap.

Technology and Innovation.

In a world where I can order a latte from my phone and have it waiting for me (bless!), it’s only fitting that trucking companies step up their tech game. Efficient tracking systems, real-time updates, and user-friendly interfaces can make your experience a breeze. And yes, we know the tech-savvy truckers in the bunch.

To Wrap It Up...

Choosing a reliable trucking service can feel like a Herculean task, but it doesn’t have to be. With a trusted broker like us by your side, consider the heavy lifting done. Let’s find that perfect fit for you, one that makes your shipping dreams come true, sans the stress.
