California’s main north-to-south artery is I-5, which runs along from San Diego through Los Angeles, through Sacramento and up into Oregon. San Francisco ships to the more easterly states along I-80, and Los Angeles uses I-15, I-40 and I-19. San Diego sends goods to the southwest on the I-8.
With an annual Gross Domestic Product in the neighborhood of two trillion dollars, California doesn’t just have the biggest state economy in the US, it has the tenth biggest economy in the world. Agriculture dominates California trucking, but it also has a strong high-tech manufacturing and aerospace sector, especially in the northern part of the state. California grows a large percentage of US-produced fruit, and of course it has a huge wine industry.
California Shipping and Trucking to Texas, Colorado, Illinois and More
Los Angeles, the second largest city in the US, is an active hub for both trucking and other types of shipping, sending and receiving goods from across the state, across the country and all over the world, especially Asia. We have high demand for logistics on cross country shipping from Los Angeles to Miami, sometimes via Georgia. Los Angeles to New York is also a major shipping route, often with stops in Illinois and Michigan. There’s an aerospace trucking route from California to Texas and Florida, as well. Shipping is readily available from California to every part of the US.
California Trucking Rules and Regulations
California’s state government is a leader in environmental regulation, and the trucking industry is not exempt from the extra rules. The general site for California trucking rules and regulations is on the CalTrans website. Please see the California EPA Air Resources board website for more information on California trucking emissions regulations.
California divides trucks into standard, oversize/overweight and superload designations, and you can find the details on oversize and overweight permits on their Transportation Permits web page. For information on routine trip permits, see the page on California Vehicle Regulation. There’s also a useful page on Special Route Restrictions. Every truck requires a permit to operate in California.
Perhaps surprisingly, given their heavy regulation in other areas, California allows nighttime shipping for standard trucks on standard routes. California freight transport is restricted during rush hour in San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco. No travel is allowed from approximately 6:00am to 9:00am or from 3:00pm until 6:00pm. The details are printed on individual permits. California does not allow trucking on holidays or holiday weekends. Please see the CalTrans site for details.
